BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Mura has dedicated his career to the treatment of complex eye disorders. Currently, he holds the position of Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Ferrara and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Arcispedale Sant’Anna of Ferrara.

As a thoroughly skilled vitreoretinal surgeon with an impressive track record of success, Prof. Mura boasts of a wealth of experience, having undergone rigorous training in prestigious institutions in Italy, the United States, England, and the Netherlands. 

After receiving his medical degree in ophthalmology, he pursued a retina fellowship at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam. Upon completing his fellowships, Prof. Mura has gone on to advance through the ranks in both academia and clinical practice worldwide.

Before his current appointment as Professor and Chairman at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Ferrara, he held positions as Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam, Chairman of the Retina Division at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, and Associate Professor at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

As a vitreoretinal surgeon, Prof. Marco Mura specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and vitreomacular traction. He is highly skilled in performing advanced surgical procedures such as vitrectomy, scleral and macular buckling and utilizes cutting-edge technologies to provide the highest level of care to his patients. Prof Mura is known to be a swift cataract surgeon which makes him an all round microsurgeon.

There are various types of retina diseases that affect people of different ages. Some retina diseases are age-related and are more common among the elderly, while others occur typically in children and adolescents. Prof. Mura is an expert in treating patients of all ages, including children with eye diseases, which can be challenging due to the smaller size and developmental stage of their eyes. Throughout his career as a vitreoretinal surgeon, Prof. Mura has gained additional expertise in paediatric vitreoretinal surgery, particularly in treating specific diseases like PFV and ROP, which present already at birth.

Eye injuries are a common occurrence and can happen to anyone at any age. These injuries can be severe and may require surgical intervention to treat them effectively. Prof. Mura has extensive experience in treating both primary eye traumas and previously treated injuries that may require more complex interventions.
